16th November will be the 15th anniversary of the murder of Ignacio
Martín Baró, the outstanding social psychologist who introduced
the idea of Liberation Psychology. Martín-Baró was one of 6 Jesuit
academics, who with their househeeper and her daughter, were
murdered at the University of Central America in San Salvador, El
Salvador. Colleagues involved in the liberation psychology
movement in Latin America are calling for activities of
commemoration of Martín-Baró in other countries this coming
November. I am hoping that one of my articles on Liberation
Psychology will appear in The Psychologist around then (see the
pre-publication draft which gives more information about Martín-
Baró, his work, and that of others at
http://publications.compsy.org.uk ), but it would also be good if
there were some kind of activity that both commemorated Martín-
Baró as well as focussing us on how to move on with these ideas.
Perhaps the forthcoming Exeter community psychology conference
14/15 October 2004 is close enough to November 16 to serve that
purpose. Martín-Baró was killed by an army brigade trained at the
School of the Americas in the USA. The same imperialist policies
that killed him still continue with our own country shamefully allied
with the centre of all this abuse: surely this is something that a
community and critical psychology can speak to, while trying to
understand the ideological, social motivational, and cognitive social
processes that allow and sustain such things. Perhaps it (i.e. we)
can also contribute something distinctive and catalytic to the
struggle for alternatives.
It would be good to hear people's reactions and ideas.
