Okay Tom,
Here's some news from the middle of the country (UK that is):
I am pleased to announce the publication by Routledge of New Qualitative
Methodologies in Health and Social Care edited by Frances Rapport, Julian
Tudor Hart Senior Research Fellow, Primary Care Group, University of Wales,
Swansea. Included in the book is my chapter, "The Turn to a Narrative
Knowing of Persons: Minimalist Passive Interviewing Technique and Team
Analysis of Narrative Qualitative Data". The publication will be celebrated
by a launch in Cardiff at the end of May.
At a recent conference on Narrative at Huddersfield University, two of the
three PhD candidates whom I supervise (Everton Bolton and Zaheera Essat)
presented outlines of their research projects explaining how they arrived at
the use of the biographic narrative interpretive method to discover meaning
in their two very different research topics. Everton's project concerns the
narratives of people with severe and enduring mental illness. Zaheera's
project is investigating the use of the biographic narrative interpretive
method to elicit stories from ethnic minority women who have given birth.
Following the presentations on their processes of choosing a narrative
method for a PhD project I led a lively and lengthy discussion on the
method. (And this is where I got to meet Lynn Froggett, known as 'the lady
in black' on the day! She and I had a another lively discussion at lunch.
I have recently used the interview technique in an interview with
author, educator and feminist Mary Gergen to appear in a special issue of
interviews in FQS (the online qualitative journal) in the Autumn. I am
also busy producing an audio-visual presentation that uses data from my PhD
narrative study on informal care for the Bournmouth Qualitative conference
in September. The musician whom I use for studio production and
collaboration on my audio pieces has his first album debut in June: Magic
Number, "That Day" by Ross Hillard. I highly recommend these kinds of
collaborations!
Cheers to everyone!
