PROSPECT AND RETROSPECT
THE ITALIAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE, LONDON
26-27 NOVEMBER 2004
CALL FOR PAPERS
The Association for the Study of Modern Italy (ASMI) is dedicating its
annual conference on 26 and 27 November 2004 to an assessment of the first
decade of the so-called ‘Second Italian Republic’.
Papers are welcome on any aspect of the politics, society, economy and
culture of Italy in this period, especially those which propose a
historical and/or comparative analysis of key developments and trends in
Italy over the last ten years.
Potential themes for such a treatment include
· Silvio Berlusconi
· Electoral reform and elections
· Constitutional reform
· The judiciary and politics
· Party politics in and out of government
· Migration and migrant communities
· Italy’s foreign and defence policy
· Economic policy and Italian membership of the Eurozone
· Protest, labour, and social movements
· Artists and intellectuals in the Second Italian Republic
However this list is not intended to be exhaustive and contributions are
welcome on other topics within the broad theme of the conference.
An abstract of circa 250 words including your name, institutional
affiliation (where appropriate) and email address should be sent in the

The deadline for the submission of paper proposals is 25 July 2004.
Authors of papers selected for inclusion in the conference programme will
be notified by 6 August 2004.
