Dear *,
A small group (John Gordon, Steve Traylen, Dave Kant and I) had a brief
discussion about what front end machines GridPP might provide to enable
sites to join LCG. We came up with 4 machines with the following
specifications and we would welcome any feedback.
1. Installation machine
===========================
Single process
512MB RAM
200GB Disk
dual Gb network connections
2. Compute element
====================
Dual processor
2GB RAM
Dual Gb Network Connection
Small(ish) Disk for system
3. Storage Element
======================
As the CE except with an additional 200GB disk to be used as a cache and
possibly disk controller to allow individual sites to add disks directly
to it if they so wish (disk on existing servers can of course be nfs
mounted on this machine).
4. Services Box
=======================
This would be thr RGMA monbox, would run ganglia etc etc
As the CE.
The machines would be rack mount machines (GridPP not supplying the
racking). The network connections would 1000/100/10 copper connections
(are all sites happy with this?). There was also some discussion that
perhaps a site should be committing at least a minimum level of resources
before GridPP would provide them with these front end machines. This
clearly requires discussion (at the PMB level) but one suggestion was
20CPUs and 1TB of Disk.
We would welcome feedback on all aspects of this proposal. We are quite
keen to move this along reasonably quickly so that it helps sites to join
LCG2.
All the best,
david
