medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (20. April) is the feast day of:
Theodore Trichinas (d. c. 330) Theodore was a hermit near
Constantinople, who got his nickname "the hairy" because he wore
nothing but a very rough hair shirt.
Caedwalla of Wessex (d. 689) Caedwalla was a not-very-nice Saxon who
conquered several other kingdoms before being converted by St.
Wilfrid. Then he went to Rome, wanting a personal baptism by the
pope. He got his baptism, but died in less than a week; his relics
are in St. Peter's.
Hugh of Anzy-le-Duc (d. c. 930) Hugh was a Poitevin. He became a
monk and revived monastic observance at several monasteries,
including assisting Berno of Baume to found Cluny.
Hildegund of Schönau (blessed) (d. 1188) HIldegund doesn't have an
approved cult, but is venerated by the Cistercians. H. was a native
of the Rhineland. She went on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land with her
father, dressed as a boy. When she got home she entered the
Cistercian monastery of Schönau near Heidelberg-as a man ("Joseph").
Her sex was only revealed after her death.
Agnes Segni of Montepulciano (d. 1317) Agnes entered a convent at
Montepulciano at age nine, and went on to found a Dominican nunnery
in the city in 1306. She was a great mystic.
Simon Rinalducci (blessed) (d. 1322) Simon was a native of Todi who
became an Augustinian friar, famous as a preacher and provincial
superior of Umbria for a time. He seems to have won most fame in
holy circles by keeping silent when unjustly accused of wrongdoing,
not wanting to cause scandal in his community. Simon's cult was
confirmed in 1833.
