The latest issue, January 2004, includes articles on 'The Blaeu Atlas of
Scotland: the Texts' and 'The Cloppenburg Crack Conundrum'.
The next Scottish Maps Forum seminar, in conjunction with the Royal Scottish
Geographical Society, will be held on Wednesday 22 September 2004, in the
National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh. The theme is the Blaeu atlas of
Scotland (volume 5 of Blaeu's 1654 Atlas Novus). Details of the programme
will be available in June, when the next issue of Cairt is due to be
published.
The seminar is one of several events in 2004 to focus on Scotland's first
atlas, in this 350th anniversary year:
* January 21 - the Blaeu Atlas of Scotland website was launched,
displaying map images, together with the first English translation of the
Latin texts. http://www.nls.uk/digitallibrary/map/early/blaeu/index.html
* March 4 - A display of items relating to the Blaeu atlas was the
Library's featured 'highlight from the collections' for World Book Day.
* April 21 - Prof Charles Withers gives a talk in the National Library
of Scotland: 'Putting Scotland in View: Blaeu's 1654 Atlas Novus and the
Nation's Geography'.
* August 16-20 - A travelling display, 'Mapping the Realm: Timothy
Pont's portrait of renaissance Scotland' will be on view at the 30th
Congress of the International Geographical Union in Glasgow.
* September 22 - Seminar (see above)
* December 2004 - January 2005 - A small display relating to the Blaeu
atlas will be mounted in the Library's George IV Bridge building.
