Hello,
Can anyone explain a few things to me about how LCFGng nodes work? I must
have muddled through last time (with EDG) without really understanding
this. In particular, I am confused about how the DHCP and LCFGng servers
interact.
There is already a DHCP server on our local network, and the grid nodes
have entries in the dhcpd.conf on this server giving them their IP
adresses and using a "next-server" line to point to the LCFG server. This
is how things were set up for EDG. Is this still right for LCG? I am
assuming it is.
Now, should the LCFG server machine also run a DHCP server? The example
dhcpd.conf is apparently designed not to respond to unknown hosts so that
it is OK to have a second DHCP server on the network. But that doesn't
stop the first DHCP server from responding, so won't there be two servers
responding to a request from one of the grid nodes?
On a practical level, should I just go ahead and follow the DHCP
configuration steps in LCFGng_server_install.txt or is there anything
else I need to change?
Finally, I am installing the nodes from boot disks rather than using PXE
because I know nothing about PXE and don't even know if the nodes support
it. (I suspect maybe not as they are quite old.) Is this reasonable, or am
I shooting myself in the foot?
Many thanks to anyone who can help me.
Cheers,
Ben
