Taking Stock of Risk
Plenary Speakers
Professor Frank Furedi and Professor Brian Wynne
The British Sociological Association Study Group on Risk and Society and the Institute for the Study of Genetics, Biorisks and Society (IGBiS) invite you to the 'Taking Stock of Risk' conference. This will take place on 6-7 September at the University of Nottingham (Nottingham, UK). The title of this year's conference is intended to stimulate debate around the idea of risk as currency in contemporary or historical settings as well as in social research. What does the appeal to 'risk' reveal and/or conceal in these cases? While the social sciences have challenged the technical monopoly on risk assessment, there has been less debate between different sociological perspectives on risk and the 'risk society'. What might we learn from bringing together observations and arguments about risk from diverse settings and theoretical frameworks? What has been the impact, if any, of social studies of risk? We invite reflections on these questions in the form of theoretical and methodological assessments and/or empirical studies.
Papers may also address any of the following general themes:
· Political / legal / social/ economic institutions and risk
· Risk, the self and everyday life
· Risk, poverty and class
· Risk and social movements
· Risk, culture and identity
· Risk, globalisation and socio-economic change
in the context of research on the environment; media; science and technology; genetics; health & medicine; workplace; family and community; national security and international relations, etc.
31st May 2004 is the deadline for submitting paper proposals.
