I thought that list members not already familiar with it might be interested to know about the Gallica site offered by the Bibliothèque National de France. It contains a huge number of microfilmed books presented online in pdf format, together with colour illustrations covering a wide range of subjects. Collections are offered in themed groups, or users can search across the collections for particular works by title, subject, author and free text. There is an extensive collection of periodicals, including the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Travel and natural history are particularly well represented, with works from the libraries of the Musée de l'Homme and the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle in addition to the BnF's own collections.

I would welcome suggestions and reviews from list members of other online resources of this kind.
Best wishes
