Currently doing an ESRC research training Masters?
Thinking about doing a PhD? Interested in issues of
social justice? Labour markets? How people on low
incomes get by? Whether something like the US-style
Living Wage Campaigns could work in the UK? Then …

ESRC Case Studentship
‘Low wage labour markets and the potential of living
wages in Greater Manchester’
Dr Kevin Ward (School of Geography, University of
Manchester) and Claire Faichnie (Greater Manchester Low Pay
Unit) have been awarded an ESRC Case Studentship entitled
‘Low wage labour markets and the potential of living wages in
Greater Manchester’. The PhD will have four main aims:
1.To identify the Low Cost but Acceptable income level for
three localities in Greater Manchester, using the
methodology developed by the Family Budget Unit at the
University of York, and used in the small number of other
UK studies (Ambrose 2003; Wills 2001, 2004);
2.To assess through qualitative researching of low paid
workers the effects that living on very low income in
each of the three localities is having on their lives, inside
and outside of the workplace;
3.To identify and explore some of what Ambrose (2003:
6) calls the ‘exported costs’ of low pay, such as those
that fall on local private and public service providers;
and
4.To examine some of the ways in which the US living wage
campaigns might be a basis for similar social movements in
the UK,
Due to the conditions attached to the funding, the eligibility
criteria requires the successful student to be classed as
UK/“home” for the purpose of the payment of tuition fees and to
have completed (or be in the process of completing) an ESRC-
recognised research training Masters. Unfortunately applicants
from outside the EU will be considered ineligible.
