But why can't you check if the airway's open from behind? I would've
thought it would be fairly easy to do this, and presumably the paramedic in
question had realised it was obstructed from behind? However, I suspect an
obstructed airway is much less common in an upright patient. But at the end
of the day I agree with Rowley; there must be plenty of ways to do jaw
thrust which won't compromise c-spine stability.
