With apologies for cross-posting
On June 4th, the British Library's new Integrated Library System (ILS) will
go live. On that date, all MARC bibliographic data created for the British
Library's catalogues, the British National Bibliography and all related
products and services will be created in the MARC 21 format.
From June, there will therefore be a number of differences to the content of
British Library records -
- in MARC 21 format (because these will be created as MARC 21 records and no
longer be "converted out" from UKMARC) and
- in UKMARC format (because these will be "converted out" from MARC 21
records and not created as UKMARC originals).
All direct customers of British Library MARC-based bibliographic services
have already been mailed with details of these changes. They are also now
available on the British Library's web site at
www.bl.uk/services/bibliographic/nbsils.html#outline
The British Library has undertaken to maintain UKMARC exports for up to
three years, depending on demand. However, there will be no further
development of the UKMARC format, or of services supplying UKMARC records.
