CALL FOR PAPER
Shaping the Past: Questions of Identity in Italian Films and Literary Works
since the 1980s.
International conference organised by the Italian Sections of the Institut
des Langues Vivantes et de Phonétique of the Université Libre de Bruxelles
and of the Department of Modern Languages, University of Wales Bangor. The
conference will be held on 28 and 29 October 2004 at the Istituto Italiano
di Cultura in Brussels.
Through this conference the organisers intend to focus on the importance of
collective and individual memory in the works of Italian writers and
directors from the 1980s until the present day. Such a theme appears to be
of particular importance during moments of transition such as the end or
the beginning of a century. Besides, in a context like that of the EU, the
constant acquisition of new member states inevitably stimulates reflections
on all aspects concerning the question of identity and on the concepts of
citizenship and nationality.
Speakers are invited to address one of the following issues:
· The representation of historical events and their significance within a
specific text/film or in the works of a particular author/director.
· Reaction to/ reinterpretation/ re-writing of traumatic events: what is
omitted or neglected in the reconstruction of a specific historical moment
is often equally, if not more, important than what is considered as
suitable to be transmitted to posterity.
· From text to screen: the representation/rewriting of the past (or of the
self) in cinematic adaptations of literary texts.
· Women and history: the role of women in historical events and their
representation in narrative or cinematic works since the 1980s.
· Autobiography and the rewriting of the self.
· The role of memory in the creation of a national identity (relevance/
irrelevance of such a concept in our contemporary society): the importance
of memory in the recreation of a micro-history and its relationship to
macro-history.
We invite proposals for 20-minute papers. The main language of the
conference will be Italian but we will also accept contributions in either
English or French
