italian-studies: Scholarly discussions in any field of Italian studies
Dear Colleagues
I am an Italian researcher at University Ca'Foscari of Venice and a teacher
of Italian at a secondary school in Udine.
Last June I set up a company in Dublin, in order to export a project that I
called "The Italian College" (www.theitaliancollege.com).
Intensive residential summer courses will take place in Ireland (Fingal and
Meath) in 2004. The aim of the "Italian Special" and "Laboratorio Italia"
courses is to propose a mix of formal language tuition and exposure to
aspects of Italian culture and civilisation. Language classes (absolute
beginners to advanced) for all participants will take place at Gormanston
College, Co. Meath, one of Ireland's premier boarding schools endowed with
excellent sports facilities. Advanced learners will have the opportunity to
attend Art seminars and Creative writing and drawing courses ("Laboratorio
Italia").
After the morning Language classes, participants will be taken by bus to
join their Arts workshop.
Creative workshops under the four headings: Mosaic art, Drama, Music, Opera
will take place in Skerries and Rush. Note that they can also be attended
independently from the language classes.
The Mosaic art workshop will examine the basis of ancient mosaic techniques.
A copy of a Roman (stone material) piece of mosaic work will be undertaken
by the participants. Skerries Watermill will host the workshop, which will
be conducted by a qualified "maestro" from the Friuli Region, Italy.
The aim of the Ortus musicae workshop is to participate in the creative
experience by composing and performing vocal and instrumental pieces and by
staging a musical, in Skerries Community Centre's Little Theatre.
The main objective of the Drama workshop (in Rush's Fingal Arts Centre) is
to perform with a "Commedia dell'arte" mask, which is excellent training
for student actors, and a lively way to marry training and performance.
Thanks to a humourous approach to phonetics, the Millbank Theatre's Opera
workshop can be of use not only to singers but also to musicians who want to
improve their Italian pronunciation skills through music. They will also
tackle specific subjects such as the metrics and prosody of an opera's
libretto and arias.
Courses are designed for singers, artists, writers, actors, teachers.
Anybody with an interest in Italian culture and civilization (age level
18+) is welcome. You can also avail of a full board accommodation option
(at Gormanston College).
