Overrating Culture at the Expense of Politics: A German Problem?
Lecture by Professor Wolf Lepenies
Venue: University of Manchester Arts Lecture Theatre, Arts Building
Tuesday, 23 March 2004 at 5pm
Organised by The Cultural Theory Institute in conjunction with the
Goethe-Institut and the Raymond Williams Memorial Trust.
Inaugural session of a new series of lectures on culture and democracy
to help restart the debate on whether there are particular kinds of
culture or cultural arrangements which foster democracy and to what
extent the idea or cause of culture itself requires or presupposes the
democratisation of society.
Prof. Wolf Lepenies, former principal of the Wissenschaftskolleg in
Berlin, is one of Europe's leading experts on cultural studies, a
subject area which he has managed to bring to the forefront of
discourse on the future of modern society. He has also worked closely
on establishing cultural frameworks in former Eastern block countries
which he views as an intrinsic part of helping to establish a
democratic form of government.
Reception to follow.
Free and open to all, but admission by ticket only.
