I was using "hypothesis" in a more restricted sense, closer to what AQUAD,
Quarlrus or HyperResearch would identify as "hypothesis testing", and also
closer to the statistical approach commonly used by many quantitative
researchers.
When I use the word "exploratory", like Tukey, I refers to methods (mainly
visual ones) of discovering unanticipated patterns and relationship When we
decide to use those tools, we have some expectations about the kind of
graphics and display we will see but I would definitely not call this an
hypothesis.
