It is now over three years since the United Nations Millennium Declaration
outlined the eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Over the next few
months id21, the development research reporting service, will focus on each
of the MDGs in turn, highlighting the latest research on putting their
aspirations into policy practice.
In 1990, 241 million people were living on less that one US dollar a day in
sub-Saharan Africa. By 1999 this had increased to 315 million people. At
present progress, an estimated 404 million people in sub-Saharan Africa
will be living on less than one US dollar a day by 2015. Yet the first
Millennium Development Goal is to halve the number of people living in such
poverty by 2015. This week, id21 reports on research examining poverty in
sub-Saharan Africa, concentrating on the elderly, the landless and women
with children who often make up the majority of those worst affected by
poverty.
