Oh boy, another horrid OpenGL problem. There is not a heck of a lot on
this subject on google, but I did find one interesting reference where
this problem occurred in PyMol with Nvidia and RedHat 9 (but not 8):

The recommendation was "wait for RedHat 9.1 or try SUSE 8.2". Not
particularly helpful I would agree.
