medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I had written:
<< Note that the NPNF volume of the councils is on-line, too:
http://www.ccel.org/fathers2/NPNF2-14/TOC.htm >>
and Bill responded:
<< But alas, the NPNF volume regards only the first six councils as
ecumenical, hence the title "The Six Ecumenical Councils"; a
distinctively Anglican position; and it is the seventh which is
relevant to your enquiry. >>
Although I'm sorry to contradict Bill, I'm happy to report in fact
the CCEL site does in fact include the Seventh Council. The URL I
provided above will take you to the TOC, and links to the sections
reproducing documents of the seventh council begin approximately 3/4
of the way down that page. A URL with slightly more convenient
formatting is:
http://www.ccel.org/fathers/NPNF2-14/7nice2/index.htm
with the decree on images here:
http://www.ccel.org/fathers/NPNF2-14/7nice2/decree.htm
The introduction:
http://www.ccel.org/fathers2/NPNF2-14/Npnf2-14-154.htm
addresses the question of that council's ecumenicity.
I believe the NPNF series electronically reprinted by the CCEL is
largely based on a similar but slightly earlier British series, with
additional material provided by the American editors; perhaps this is
the source of the confusion? I have a strong (but not infallible)
recollection that the spine label on the Eerdmans hardbound reprint
of the NPNF read "Seven Ecumenical Councils" as well, and I see
that's how the final volume is currently listed by Hendrickson:
