Central to this discussion would be Richard Mulcaster's _Elementarie_, which has a great deal to say about the vernacular. The Sp Encyc has a good discussion of M under "Merchant Tailors School." The book is much more than an early spelling book, as is sometimes said.

This has been a fascinating discussion. I have nothing to contribute,
but I hope someone out there is compiling a list of all the books that
have been mentioned and will in due course post it. Please don't ask me
to -- I am deep in the final stages of another project. But such a list
would be terrifically worthwhile -- Germaine.
