Dear all,
I've had very good success with an Olympus DM-1 which is very similar to the
DS 2000. (Cost about $200 in the U.S.)
With a 128 meg card, it will record for 22 hours standard play and 44 hours
long play. The format is optimized for speech -- creates DSS files much
smaller than wave files. One could archive 100 hours or so on a CD. Makes it
much easier to email to a transcriber, if that is what one wants to do.
The DSS player software the DM-1 comes with can function as a software
trascription machine -- I use function keys for stop with auto-set back,
forward, reverse, etc. It also allows you to convert DSS files to WAV files.
An even better software transciber, with more functions, is E-scribe
available for free on the internet from www.nch.com.au. It will
automatically convert DSS files as well as other digitial recording file
formats.
It I were buying today, I would look closely at the new Olympus dm-20. It
has 128 meg built in rather than using memory cards. If one wants, it can
record at higher quality levels (but with significant reductions in
recording time.). A table with sampling rates, sensitivity, and recording
time is on the Olympus web site.
U.S. cost is about $280.
Hope this helps.
Mitchell
