For "Girgenti" read "Agrigento"; the city was so re-named on 16 June 1927,
long enough ago to have percolated into any reference book concerned to get
things right. The sources that make Gerland a relative of Robert Guiscard
(and of the latter's brother, Roger I, who named Gerland to his see) are
late and unreliable. Geoffrey Malaterra, Roger's late 11th-century
biographer, refers to G. merely as "Gerlandum quendam, natione Allobrogum"
("a certain Gerland, of the Savoyard [or perh. "French"] nation").
Best,
