Leaving aside the recording of the building itself (which might reveal evidence of its early phases and internal arrangements (original walls, floors etc), when the workhouse here (Gressenhall, Norfolk) was developed, all sorts of artefacts came to light under floors and in dark corners. The real highlight was an early mattress, hidden in the roof and a rare survival, which now forms part of the Museum displays.

Changing the subject from WWII airfields, can I ask if anyone has recent experience of recording 19th century workhouses? We have one in Newbury that is due to be demolished - 1836, but with a lot of later additions/modifications as a hospital, not listed and not much valued locally. The original pretty much conformed to Sampson Kempthorne's cruciform design. We have got a building recording condition and are considering what we should be asking for. I haven't yet got hold of the EH publication The Workhouse: A study of Poor-Law buildings in England so perhaps all the guidance I need is in that, but in the interim, can anyone offer any pointers? Ideally I'd like one of the end-results to be an increase in local interest, though the building will be gone of course!
