Director of the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies
SCHOOL OF ADVANCED STUDY
Applications are invited for the Directorship of the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies in the School of Advanced Study, University of London.
As of 1 August 2004 the Institute of Germanic Studies and the Institute of Romance Studies will join forces to constitute the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies (IGRS), the first such research institute in Britain. Building on the strengths of the founding Institutes, the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies aims to be an international centre of excellence in the conduct, promotion and facilitation of advanced study of the cultures of Germanic and Romance language countries, across a range of disciplines in the humanities.
The successful applicant will have an established international scholarly reputation in literary or cultural studies in one or more of the languages within the scope of the Institute, together with managerial skills, a capacity for initiative and development, strong interdisciplinary interests and the ability to foster and facilitate research, postgraduate teaching and scholarship across a range of languages and disciplines. The Director is expected to contribute to postgraduate teaching and supervision.
The appointment will be full-time, with effect from September 2004 or as soon as possible thereafter. The salary will be in the region of £60,000 pa.
In addition to the Directorship, and the two academic posts in German literature are currently being advertised, and a further lecturer post in the new Institute will be advertised in March/April.
