Dear All,
Can I ask perhaps a rather 'stupid' question regarding the transcription software that you have been discussing?
Is it possible to transcribe most languages with these packages (i.e., non-English languages such as Dutch, German, French, Spanish, etc.)?
Sorry to break in on your question Anne!

Dear Anne
Transcriber is a pretty good package and is free. See my brief (5 page)
guide which summaries my presentation at the last QSR conference which
talks about using it with NVivo ('Transcribing Interviews and Focus Groups
with Transcriber, Importing into NVivo and Initial Autocoding'
Alan Stockdale has created an output format for using it with Atlas-TI
available from his excellent site, which is now available as a 60 page PDF
<http://www2.edc.org/CAEPP/QualAudio.pdf> along with other resources at the
web page <http://www2.edc.org/CAEPP/audio.html>
Of course, you don't need to use the transcriptions with QDA software, but
that at least makes it relevant to this list! You might want to drop in on
Ann Lewins who's in your department; she's very helpful.
You might want to read some of the messages in the archives of this list
about the sort of recorder you intend to use. Alan posted recently about a
soon-to-be-released Minidisc recorder which allows fast digital upload. Of
course you may be happy with a different digital recorder - and things move
on regularly.
To answer your second question: you can 'segment' your audio file and using
keyboard shortcuts replay the segment as you transcribe.
If you're looking for video transcription, Transana is free too, but I
haven't yet worked with it in great detail.
Feel free to email should you have any questions about my guide.
Duncan
