medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (22. January) is the feast day of:
Vincent the Deacon (d. 304) Vincent was from Huesca (Spain) and became a
deacon at Zaragoza. He was martyred at Valencia. He seems to have made
quite a splash---Augustine, Leo I, and Prudentius all wrote about him.
There doesn't seem to be any agreement over how he died: he appears in art
being torn with hooks, carrying his intestines, or with a millstone as his
attribute.
Blesilla (d. 383) Blesilla was a daughter of St. Paula and, with mom, a
disciple of Jerome. She went with her mother to the Holy Land, but died
back in Rome at the age of 20 (apparently of excessive asceticism).
Anastasius the Persian (d. 628) Anastasius (who started life with the
euphonious name Magundat) was a Persian soldier who converted and became a
monk in Jerusalem. When the Persians invaded the city he was captured,
taken to Shah Chosroes II, and executed. Even though his head made it to
the Roman church of SS Anastasius and Vincent, A's cult was limited to
local calendars in 1969.
Dominic of Sora (d. 1031) Dominic was from Foligno. He became a priest
there, and was founding abbot of several monasteries in central Italy,
including Sora (Lazio).
Walter of Bruges (blessed) (d. 1307) There seems to be an interesting
story behind this unconfirmed cult. Walter was from Bruges. He became a
Franciscan and in time bishop of Poitiers. In that capacity, W.
excommunicated his metropolitan, Bernard de Got (can a bishop really do
this?)---who became Pope Clement V and got his revenge by deposing W. So
W. went back to being a Franciscan, and was vindicated after his death.
