Like many works of Augustine, Solil. is traditionally cited by means of two
section numbers within each book: thus 1.v.11, refers to book one, section 5 OR
section 11, depending on which of two different consecutive numberings of the
sections within each book is followed. Most texts and translations print both
sets of numbers, usually distinguishing the first set by using roman
numerals. I assume the two systems derive from different early printed editions, but I
don't know off hand whether this is true. Anyway, the point is that the third
number is not a line number. I haven't got the CSEL text at home, so I don't
know whether this follows the traditional custom or not.
