In response to Sarah's query a number of helpful suggestions for
further
information have been made, and Diana Murray explained what Ordnance
Survey
Object Name Books (ONBs) are. By the way, something like 'RONB, Hunts,
19
SE, 1924, 31' is the old OS Archaeology Division in-house way of saying
that
there is a site reference on page 31 of Revision Object Name Book
(revision
meaning a revised map sheet) for Huntingdonshire sheet 19 SE (county
series)
dated 1924. As Diana said, the ONBs contain a wealth of information,
much
of it not recorded anywhere else. I remember the ONB for Whitby
contained
details and sketch plans of the excavations underway at the abbey when
the
relevant map sheet was revised in the 1920s. Because OS staff had
ready
access to the ONBs that survived the blitz on Southampton, only a
precis of
the site information they contained was included on the cards. If
anyone is
interested I attach a copy of an ONB page below.
With regard to the other abbreviations, Corr 6" is correspondent 6",
meaning
an OS map annotated with new and updated information by one of a
network of
local correspondents (a system started by OGS Crawford and including
many
notable archaeologists such as Leslie Grinsell). Some of these
recorded
additional information on a card index - hence Corr 6" and card index -
a
few of which have found their way in to the NMR. A specific day, month
and
year date is probably when the individual site comment was made. Rec
6"
(record 6") and Rev 6" (revision 6") were internal Archaeology Division
maps
where comments reported by other interested parties were recorded.
Hope that helps a bit.
David

Subject: History of SMRs
Dear all
I may be showing my age here but can anyone decipher these
abbreviations
which frequently occur as sources in the Cambs SMR.
OS ONB, 1925
OS RONB, Hunts, 19 SE, 1924, 31.
OS Corr 6 in, (Tebbutt CF), 04/11/1955
OS Rec 6ins (Anon undated)
OS Rev 6in, 30/06/1950 (AO)
OS Corr 6in and Card Index, 1954 (SJ Hallam)
Obviously these relate to the history of how information was collected
by
the OS and by whom, but what exactly are the different types of
reference?
Is all the information these are referring to that that was on the OS
cards
that formed the basis for many SMRs?
Thanks
Sarah
