I'd also like to hear what others have to say as it's something I've
often thought about.
My spell checker automatically changes a lower case 'n' to an upper case
N when I type in a sentence which includes the word Neolithic for
example (in fact it's just changed it as I typed it!) but doesn't alter
the word medieval unless it appears at the beginning of a sentence.
Medieval relates to the Middle Ages which I would write using an upper
case M and A.
I also looked it up in the dictionary and medieval is listed with a
lower case m and Neolithic with an upper case N. That would help your
argument for writing it as 'medieval' although I'd still like to know
