I mentioned before that the older donations of Roman altars in the BM had their inscriptions restored in red.
Reading over Xmas Paul Bidwell's Roman Forts in Britain, he says that some forts were externally plastered white anbd had false mortar joints painted in red (but he does not give a source). So perhaps the practice has precedent, as they did in that case have permanent red stonepaint
