within industry. Their latest report, written by colleagues at Henley
Management College, is entitled "Corporate e-learning: Delivering
business benefits". The report investigates the practical problems,
solutions and imperatives that have emerged as senior managers
embarked on e-learning programmes and includes case studies from
companies such as Dixons, Danfoss, IBM, Volkswagen and SA
Armstrong.

3.1 PDAs and SMS in education: an overview of mobile technologies
A one-day workshop
Thursday 4 March 2004, 1000-1530

The workshop will take a basic look at PDAs (personal digital assistants)
and SMS (text messaging) and explore some educational uses for these
technologies. We will demonstrate the use of PDA in registration and in
class work (e.g. use of images in identification; recording GPS); the use
of presentation software; how other ‘office’ based software can be used
and how some can connect to the Internet. We will discuss how text
messaging is being used within the sector and explore one free, on-line

4.8 Learning on Screen 2004
Valuing moving pictures and sound in learning, teaching and research

The British Universities Film & Video Council is collaborating with the
Society for Screen-Based Learning in organising this important
conference which will take place at the Regent's Park Holiday Inn,
Carburton Street, London W1. On the evening of 5th April the Learning
on Screen Awards 2004 will be presented during the conference dinner.
The programme for the two main days of the conference will be

5.1 Open Invitation to the Higher and Post 16 Education Sector for
Volunteers for Membership of JISC Sub-committees
Deadline: 13 February 2004
1. The Joint Information Systems Committee is an advisory
committee to the UK post 16 funding councils (further and higher
education) and research councils. It is responsible for funding IT
services and providing innovation in the use of IT for learning and
teaching, research and administration. Its budget is around £64m per
year.

5.2 JISC invitations to tender
5.2.1 JISC Records Management/LLL Record Tender
The JISC has recently issued a tender document inviting proposals for a
study to explore the legal and records management issues relating to the
concept of the Lifelong Learner Record (LLR). The study will support and
inform both the JISC Records Management and Managed Learning
Environments (MLEs) for Lifelong Learning programmes. Tenders
should be submitted by 12 noon on Monday 9th February 2004. The
study should be undertaken in the period 1 March 2004 - 28 February
2005. Funding of up to £50,000 inclusive of VAT and expenses is

5.2.2 JISC Circular 1/04: Call for Projects in Core Middleware
JISC Circular 1/04 invites further and higher education institutions to
submit funding proposals for a range of new developments in core
middleware, with a specific focus on inter-institutional authorisation and
related topics. The deadline for receipt of proposals is 12 noon on
Wednesday 3rd March 2004. Projects should commence as soon as
possible, ideally April 2004.
Funding is available on a scale of £3 million over three years (up to £1
million p.a.) from the date of award. Shorter projects offering early
payback in the form of deliverables which can be tested in service are
also welcome and will be favourably considered. As a general guideline
it is anticipated that most projects will be awarded funding of between
£50,000 and £300,000 depending on the extent and complexity of the
work involved, although exceptional cases will also be considered.
A town meeting will be held in central London on the morning of Friday 6
February 2004 to provide a forum for discussion of the call and its
subject matter. Attendance is free and on a first come, first served basis
and is limited to two representatives from each institution. Please contact

Posts are not limited to specialists in any specific area of education; we
aim to appoint the best candidates. However, we would particularly
welcome applicants who could add strength to the School’s profile in one
or more of the following areas: classroom interaction, inclusion; teaching
and learning strategies; emotional and social issues in education; 14-19

Senior Learning Technologist
GRADE: Research Grade II
SALARY RANGE: £25,451 to 33,679 per annum
The University of Oxford’s Technology-Assisted Lifelong Learning
(TALL) unit has been at the forefront of online education since its
inception in 1996. The remit of the unit is to research the technology and
pedagogy of online learning, feeding the results into the production of
quality learning experiences for both the University and high profile
external clients.
TALL now requires a Senior Learning Technologist for a period of six to
nine months. Secondments and part-time working arrangements would
be considered. Reporting to the Director of TALL, the Senior Learning
Technologist will take responsibility for all pedagogical aspects of online
learning for the TALL team. Educated to degree level with at least three
years experience gained in a similar environment, he/she will have a
strong working knowledge of educational technologies and their
implications for learning as well as practical experience of applying that
knowledge to course design and delivery.
