Bernhard,
Do I remember correctly that Merida is mainly an orthogonal grid with
alternate one way streets in opposite directions? I think that you need
to try a number of representations. The simplest would be a conventional
axial map. It would be important for this to be extensive since much of
the variation in a relatively uniform grid arises from its lines
embedding differently with relation to the larger context. I would
expect that little account would need to be taken of the one way aspect
of traffic management unless a single calle had two opposing sections of
one way. If that were the case then I suggest trying a version of the
map in which that line is broken to reflect this. Second, I would expect
there to be some variations along the length of a calle dependent on its
intersection with orthogonals of greater of lesser importance in the
overall configuration. As in "drive north on Calle 56, turn left onto
23, go two quadras and turn right onto 54". Only certain segments of
certain lines may be more important overall than others. In order to
investigate this I would construct a segment based analysis in Meander
where segments that do not deviate in direction receive a 0 depth
weighting while those which are orthogonal get a 1 depth rating. A
similar representation with segment based choice measures could also
give useful results. I think that Shinichi Iida's programs for doing
this are probably the ones to use (is there anything else out there
Sheep?).
Against all of this an important question is what data are you trying to
explain? If it is vehicular traffic flows, then do you have dense
segment by segment observations across the whole city recording both
major and minor routes with multiple counts along the length of a calle?
If so then you have a real opportunity to find out something new...
All the best,
