Hi,
One extra thing about buying these - if you get them from Agross them you can make some savings and sometimes get extras - like speakers or free disks.

Just adding my note to the fan mail about the Sony mini-disc. Brilliant sound and especially good when you figure out the track marks.

Mini-disc is excellent - very small (about 2.5 inches square by 0.5 inch deep) - very unobtrusive - excellent sound pick-up and quality and you can get 5 hours without changing disc or battery. Mine comes with removable extra battery plug in as well as interior rechargeable battery. I bought a Sony (see below) and have had no trouble at all doing my (so far) 19 interviews. You can pre-set track marks (helps in transcribing and referring back to disc) or mark the tracks while reviewing. This is a note which I prepared for fellow students, based on what two of us purchased:

  The cost was:

  £60 multi-directional (electret condenser) microphone ECM-DS70P

£195 player: Net MD Walkman MZ-N710

  £10 10 of 74 minute discs

  £265 total

(I recall 10 of 80 minute discs were £12.) The MD player comes with all the leads, case, etc you need. See Lizzie's note to me at the bottom of this message about her kit: she got a better price on the MD player.

I went to the Sony shop in Leeds. Lizzie used the Sony shop in York. I'm sure there'll be one in Birmingham. Sony claim their retail outlets are very price competitive, but to be honest they were the only shop I went into where they seemed to know what they were doing and where there was a reasonable selection.

I asked for the same model player Lizzie bought (see below), but they told me it was now discontinued and replaced with the one I bought. With charged up and back up batteries and using the slower speed, I should be able to record sessions up to 4hours 56 minutes, without having to touch the machine.

The multi-directional microphone is the same price Lizzie paid for the tabletop microphone. Its advantage is that it needs no separate power source and it's more sensitive. Its disadvantage is that you get a bit of noise from the whiz of the disc. It's so sensitive that, from the kitchen, it picked up my voice as I walked around the house from room to room talking to my cousin on the 'phone. If the disc whiz were too annoying, I could get a lead.

  As ever,

  Helen

I can give you the details of my mini disc recorder, which I am rather in awe of but very pleased with. It was quite expensive and you may be able to get one cheaper. I ended up going to the Sony shop as I needed help. I now have MZ-N707S Potable NET MD Walkman in Silver (citing from the box description!). I have a ECM S80 Stereo Tabletop Microphone (which is apparently used for conferences) The whole lot came to 219 pounds!! BUT it performed great at my pilot focus group and got all the voices and comments. They couldn't believe it was working and so it didn't interfere with the research a bit! In fact when I was making them a cuppa they forgot it was there and when I switched it off one of the group said - Oh no now you will hear all about my diet! - so definitely not intrusive. I did take an extension lead with me which was helpful .
