I have been involved in designing and running a few mass experiments,
including most of the megalabs. Here is a list of some of the main ones:
The Truth Test - comparing lie detection abilities on the radio, TV and
print (about 30,000 people: BBC and Daily Telegraph)
The Justice Experiment - are a jury influenced by the degree to which a
defendant looks like a stereotypical criminal (60,000 people: BBC and Daily
Telegraph)
Laughlab - search for the world funniest joke (about 250,000 people - more
info at www.laughlab.co.uk: joint with BA)
Hauntings - having large numbers of the public take part in studies run an
apparently haunted locations, looking at the psychology of ghostly
experiences (about 2000 people)
The Lottery Study - can lucky people predict the outcome of the national
lottery (1000 people: BBC). Part of the luck project: www.luckfactor.co.uk
Mass ESP experiment - run with The Museum of the Unknown and Sci-Fi Channel
- looking at whether ESP exists (about 2000 people)
