Title: A genetic algorithm for modelling decisions for admission to
long-term care for older people
Speaker: Ruxandra Gorunescu, University of Craiova, Romania
----
Abstract:
This paper describes the use of genetic algorithms to analyse a UK data set
relating to admission of older people to long-term care. The methods used
will be described and results presented. The talk first presents some basic
concepts of the field of evolutionary computation, a field of great
importance and popularity among search and optimisation techniques. Next, a
model built through the means of a new approach to the application of
evolutionary computation principles to rule discovery is proposed. The model
is meant to be able to "think" just as a real multidisciplinary review panel
for admission to long-term care. It is intended to understand the
classification rules in which decision is conducted by the panel and to
predict a correct classification of previously unseen applicants. Thus, the
model can be a possible way of checking the consistency of such a review
panel's placement decisions. Integrating the model with electronic record
would provide a real time evaluation of the decision making process and
managers could monitor the impact of changing members of the panel on the
outcome of decisions.
