VISITING ARTS INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP 2004
IN ASSOCIATION SITE GALLERY, SHEFFIELD, UK
OPEN TO ARTISTS WORKING WITH LENS-BASED/DIGITAL MEDIA WORK FROM
ARGENTINA, BRAZIL, CHILE, COLOMBIA, PERU, URUGUAY & VENEZUELA
As part of Visiting Artsı ongoing commitment to residency opportunities for
artists based outside the UK, Visiting Arts, in collaboration with the
British Council is announcing an International Fellowship at Site Gallery in
Sheffield, United Kingdom. This Fellowship is open to applications from
visual artists working with lens-based/digital media work and who are living
and working in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela &
Uruguay.
This first year will be a pilot programme with Site Gallery and will offer a
three-month Fellowship, based in Sheffield for an outstanding young artist,
working primarily with lens-based/digital media work. This opportunity will
develop their artistic practice by creating new work, interacting with local
artists and audiences and extending professional contacts. The artist will
be expected to give a lecture/workshop at Site Gallery or an idea/sharing
session.
Throughout the Fellowship period the applicant will be encouraged to build
contacts across the region with artists, arts professionals and academics
and a number of networking events will facilitate this.
Timing
The 2004 three-month residency will take place from end August to November
2004 (exact dates to be confirmed).
Eligibility
The Visiting Arts/Site Gallery International Fellowship is open to
professional, practising artists working primarily with lens-based/digital
media work living and working in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru,
Uruguay & Venezuela. However please note that applications cannot be
accepted on an open submission basis. The artist will in the first instance
be nominated by recommendation of a recognised institution or artist,
curator/critic, gallery, society, artist-led organisation of cultural
contact. Artists should have graduated for a minimum of 5 years and have
exhibited work; and may have some international experience in their field.
Definition of lens-based/digital media work
Includes film, video both chemical and digital photography, interactive and
on-line media.
Selection criteria will include:
· A commitment to contemporary issues and methodology
· Quality of practice
· Previous demonstrations of social working practice
· A project proposal which will benefit from the artist being located
in Sheffield
· A project which can take advantage of the facilities, technical
support and equipment available in Site Galleryıs i-lab (please see web site

It is hoped that the residency will lead to continuing links between the
artists' country of origin and the UK.
Personal Qualities
Applicants need to demonstrate that they:
· can speak proficient English (Please note: the successful candidate
may be interviewed for English proficiency by the local British Council
office)
· have high professional standards
· have sufficient maturity to fit into a foreign environment
· have a willingness to communicate and share ideas, knowledge and
information
· are committed to developing artistic links between their own country
and the UK
· have a flexible, adaptable, positive and confident personal style
· are independent, resourceful, responsible and calm under pressure
Nomination and Selection Process
Key contacts with extensive knowledge and experience of the visual arts
sector and culture and arts of the countries involved will advise, encourage
and mediate submitted applications from artists based there. A small
selection committee will then draw up a short list for consideration with
one artist chosen to undertake the residency in 2004. The small selection
committee will include representatives from Site Gallery and Visiting Arts,
as well as a UK artist and/or curator with knowledge and experience of the
region and will be managed by Visiting Arts.
Facilities and costs covered
The residency covers;
· one return airfare to the UK
· limited travel costs in the UK (approx. £200)
· accommodation costs in the UK for the duration of the three month
residency
· per diems for the duration of the three month residency
· a small allowance for materials and technical support
· a studio room at Site Gallery for the residency period
· Support from a Digital Technician
· a small budget for documenting the Fellowship
· full access to i-lab equipment
How to apply
Applications must include the following material:
* Completed application cover sheet provided by Visiting Arts

* an up-to-date Curriculum Vitae (including date of birth, education and
training undertaken and listing exhibitions, awards, publications etc.)
* Between 15 and 20 slides of recent work (or digital images if necessary)
and/or VHS video (if applicable). A brief description of each slide must be
included along with title, date, medium and size.
* a recent photograph
* Copies of catalogues or documentation of your work relevant to this
application
* an artistsı statement explaining your work. Please also include a
description of a recent project/exhibition/commission you carried out,
outlining how it came about (i.e. why you were chosen), what your response
was to the initial proposal and a description/explanation of the work
created.
* outline the reasons for your interest in the residency, how it will
benefit your artistic practice and what you hope to achieve by coming to the
UK
* A letter of recommendation from a recognised institution, curator/critic,
gallery and/or cultural contact

Visiting Arts - Cultural Relations through the arts
Visiting Arts is the national agency for promoting the flow of international
arts into the UK and developing related cultural links abroad to help build
cultural awareness, positive cultural relations and fostering mutually
beneficial arts contacts at national, regional, local and institutional
levels.
Visiting Arts activities include advice, information, training, consultancy,

Residency Host
Site Gallery is an international centre for contemporary art, offering a
changing exhibitions programme <../exhibit_events/exh.html> backed up with
regular publications <books.html> and a comprehensive calendar of
conferences, artists talks, events <../education/public.html> and short

Imaging Innovation Lab (iLab), providing a well-resourced production
