SOLEIL is an optimized 2.75 GeV synchrotron light source of third generation
under construction in the South of Paris. The first 10 beamlines are planed
to be open to users in 2006.
SCIENTIST IN CHEMICAL PHYSICS ON A VUV BEAMLINE AT SOLEIL
Location : St Aubin (25 km South of Paris), France
Application deadline : February 28th 2004
A beamline scientist permanent position is available on the DESIRS VUV
project beamline covering the VUV range with very high resolution and
variable polarizations to study :
(i) high resolution spectroscopy, photon-induced dynamics and chemical
reactivity studies on cold molecules, aggregates, radicals, laser-excited
species and luminescent solids.
(ii) Alignment in the photon-matter interaction, dichroism and chirality on
anisotropic targets such as fixed-in-space, laser-aligned or chiral
molecules, adsorbates and surfaces.
MISSIONS
The candidate will be involved in both the instrumental developments and the
scientific activity of the DESIRS beamline, in coordination with the two
other beamline scientists. He/she will be involved during the first years in
the conception and commissioning of the beamline and then in the beamline
development, maintenance and users support program. Besides, the applicant
will be in charge of the technical developments of the SAPHIRS setup and the
scientific coordination of the corresponding user’s community. The “SAPHIRS”
setup consists in a molecular beam chamber which hosts several spectrometers
belonging to either external users or directly owned by DESIRS/SOLEIL. They
include in particular different electron/ion coincidence spectrometers.
In addition, the candidate will conduct his own research program in the
scientific fields covered by the beamline and using the SAPHIRS set up
taking advantage of the unique features of the beamline such as the
versatile polarizations, the high flux and spectral purity available. This
scientific program could be conducted both within the course of in-house
research activity or through collaborations that he/she will stimulate
within the general scientific community. His own field of interest should
cover the physical and chemical aspects (state-to-state photochemistry) of
the valence shell dissociative ionization on isolated species and/or on
aggregates.
QUALIFICATION AND EXPERTISE
Minimum qualifications include a PhD in Physics or Chemistry plus a
post-doctoral experience providing the candidate with a solid background and
experimental skills in gas phase molecular photo-dynamics in the UV/VUV
range, including photodissociation and photoionization processes.
Prior expertise in charge particle optics and spectrometers, coincidence
techniques, computer handling of coincidence data (acquisition and data
treatment) and molecular beams techniques is mandatory. A solid knowledge of
the techniques and instrumentation associated with VUV Synchrotron Radiation
would be strongly appreciated.
In addition the candidate should be fluent in English (written and spoken)
and have an adequate knowledge of French.
