Probably a geared winder........
Interesting reference in
Andre GG (1878), Treatise on Mining Machinery Vol 2, Spon. page 132:
"The winding machinery used in the Western United States of America offers
some peculiarities worthy of notice. In the hoisting apparatus, the winding
reels or drums are operated either by cog or friction gearing. The latter
was much used a few years ago, but as the depth of the mines has increased
it has been abandoned by some and replaced by cog gearing, which is thought
safer and more effective for deep works."
Also:
Davies E.H, (1902), Machinery for Metalliferrous Mines 2nd ed, Crosby,
Lockwood. (page 83) refers to a geared hoisting engine of the "American
Type". Both a plan and elevation of this type of engine are included (Figs
52 & 53).
