Jock,
You may be interested to see the evidence provided by John Sparham, district
medical officer, to the Royal Commission on the condition of mines in G.B.
(The Kinnaird Commission), House of Commons sessional papers 1864, Vol 24,
Pt 2 Appendix 1, p452-3. Its only a page and a half but in it he discusses,
ailments, accidents, diet, welfare etc. I've never seen the whole document
but its possible other medical men associated with mines also gave evidence,
there was over 200 witnesses. Perhaps someone else on the list can confirm
this.
You can get a photocopy of these 2 pages by emailing the House of Lords

Subject: mine physicians
Colleagues,
Is anyone out there know of a discreet literature on mine physicans/company
doctors? I work mainly on southern Africa
and such figures only put in a fleeting appearance in that literature. I
assume that in other regions they may be more
prominent. Jock
