The Flemish Association for Industrial Archaeology is actually campaigning
to save the last coke plant in Belgium from destruction: 'Carcoke',
situated in Zeebrugge near the coast. They have requested the legal
protection of the site under the Flemish historic buildings law.
Though a website they offer a series of photographs, information on the
history and value of the site and its built heritage, and links to other
websites with information on the site and on coke plants.

VVIA urgently asks for international support.
* Please send them all information you have on the conservation,
interpretation and re-use of similar sites and brownfield
* Have a look at the above mentioned website and support their campaign
by writing a letter to the ministers in charge of culture and the
environment (click on 'SOS Carcoke' to find their address). Let them know
that you want this monument of industrial activity in Flanders to be
protected and safeguarded for the future

The 'Vlaamse Vereniging voor Industriële Archeologie' (Flemish Association
for Industrial Archaeology) was established in 1978 and celebrates its 25th
anniversary next Saturday, March 27th. VVIA is the overall volunteer n.g.o.
for industrial and technical heritage in the Dutch speaking part of Belgium
