Slide Libraries & the Digital Future Study Day. ARLIS Visual Resources Committee

DATE: Tuesday 23rd November 2004

TIME: 10.00am - 16.30pm

VENUE: Brunei Gallery, School of Oriental and African Studies, Russell Square, London.

AUDIENCE: UK Slide Librarians in HE and those responsible for visual collections

"Higher education in the UK has always needed images, especially in the field of art and design, and institutions have built up their own slide libraries to service that demand. Latterly, however, it is digital images that are being sought by lecturers and students and numerous products are being produced to accommodate this need. Slide librarians need to educate themselves about these new products and update their skills so that they can continue to ensure that their specialist knowledge of image use at higher education level is applied by the new developers". Jenny Godfrey (2004)

Based on the paper "A Digital Future for Slide Libraries" by Jenny Godfrey, published in the Art Libraries Journal, this day is a re-run of the popular study day held in March. There have been new developments in the field since March and these will be addressed. The aim of the day is to inform practitioners about resources and good practice in the use of digital images in HE in the UK.
As well as Jenny Godfrey, presenters will include Jan Merton (previously of the RCA) on the project to digitise the RCA Record of Student Work, Nicola Bonnick (Kingston University) on subscription image databases available on the web, Marie-Therese Pym (Information Management Officer AHDS Visual Arts) on creating metadata, Mike Pringle (AHDS Visual Arts) on a new National Digital Image Initiative, and David Crook (CLA) on the proposed CLA scanning licence.

Delegates will be able to attend the exhibition "Asia: Body Mind Spirit" in the Brunei Gallery during the lunch break. This exciting exhibition presented by Asia house and The Wellcome Trust explores Asia's holistic approach to medicine, which advocates a balanced relationship of body, mind and spirit. Delegates will also have the opportunity to explore the Japanese roof garden.
