Yes it should be about standards but surely standards are no good if they
don't reflect market trends. A standard that didn't reflect the way IE
worked would not persuade a lot of people because as much as we care about
interoperability, whether IE is packed into XP, promote the use of XML, etc,
the general user is going to use what is to hand and convenient. Shouldn't
standards aim to guide creators to make sites as accessible as they
reasonably can? Personally I would like to see more use of free software,
more use of Linux, Free BSD and products Open Office but I don't think it
would work as a standard. Open interoperable (free) software should serve as
the guiding idea but until solutions that work for the creators (in terms of
creativity, money and ease of use) I think there will always be some
compromise. I guess the question becomes 'around what issues should we be
willing to compromise'.

That matches my experience of 80%-ish claiming to be IE. Of course, I can
only dream of getting the sort of traffic NMSI gets ;-)

Indeed. I was just surprised by the claim of 98% IE.
