Hi all
as a commercial developer and interpreter, this topic is of great interest but my comments are slightly tangential to this discussion.
Re: use of PDAs in museums - commercially speaking, their use by large numbers of visitors in cultural and natural heritage sites are few and far between, though there have been some truly notable successes: Turin's cinema museum and I believe in Californian museums. The CIMI organisation's (Handscape) http://www.cimi.org website might reveal some more evaluation reports, although they're probably a wee bit dated by now.
My employer, ATS Heritage, are consultants currently developing interpretive trails using PDAs for Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park under the MoPark EU programme, although we are a fair way away from evaluation which will be carried out next year and is likely to be shared with other European partners.
Our colleagues also used PDAs at Versailles last year, but I do not know how or if they were evaluated.
Dulwich Picture Gallery have been also using PDAs for school groups.
Morag, you may have heard about use of our GPS-triggered PDA tour of Montreal Harbour?
best
Robbie
