From: The University of Reading Main Library Whitekights
We are at present experiencing a 'run' of cracked CD-ROMs which are
inserted in plastic pockets, found either in the front or back of thick
(700-900 pages) paperbacks (mostly student text books). We think the
damage is occurring when the (frequently used) books are returned via
the library book drop.
The book lands unevenly into a thickly padded container and then heavier
items fall on it. We have no problem with CD-ROMs in hardback books.
We would be interested to hear if any other library is experiencing
similar problems with CD-ROMs inserted into paperbacks, and how they are
dealing with the CD-ROMs breaking.
