(INTER-)FACING: THEORY AND PRACTICE
THE UNIVERSITY OF EXETER, 21-22 APRIL 2005
This inter-disciplinary symposium aims to provide a forum for exchange
between
researchers, academics, and practitioners of film and new digital media.
The
symposium is organised by the University of Exeter, and is in
collaboration
with the Exeter Picture House, The Bill Douglas Centre and the South
West Film
and Television Archive. The symposium's objectives are to expose and
promote
the diverse and dynamic film culture that exists in Exeter and
throughout the
South West. The symposium presents a unique opportunity to expand
debates
beyond the perceived 'Culture Capitals' of the UK.
In order to ensure an inclusive forum for discussion, within which
exchange
and collaboration may take place, panels will be made up of
practitioners and
theoreticians. Papers and films will form the basis of a discussion led
by
panel members. It is hoped that this discussion will consider how the
interface between theory and practice in film and new digital media is
experienced by a diverse range of institutions, organisations and
individuals.
The University of Exeter and the Exeter Picture House will act as venues
for
discussion panels, screenings and exhibitions.
Our objective is to allow for an exploration of the different ways in
which we
receive, experience and analyse the moving image which may include
analysis of
the following: archives, film ephemera, creation and production,
pedagogy and
research, and spectatorship. We are particularly interested in papers
or
films/ documentation of practice relating to the following areas:
* Intersecting histories (identity and memory)
* Models of spectatorship across diverse film media
* New technologies: politics, pedagogy and practice in film and
new digital
media.
* Interfacing geographies: local, national and global spaces.
Papers should be 20 minutes long. Films should be a maximum of 15
minutes,
plus a five minute talk. It must be possible to show films on a single
screen.
We welcome collaborations between practitioners and theoreticians.
For written papers please submit a 200 word abstract. For films/
practical
work please submit a 200 word abstract and/ or a completed piece of
practical
work.
