Dear Jason:
I think there was a real choice here, and that is what is so sad about what a majority of my fellow Americans chose. The Democratic Party is the party of equal opportunity, a platform that stood for universal health insurance coverage, universal access to college education, national social security, etc. The Republican party is the party of entitlement, that masks its economic agenda in religious rhetoric. Marxist critics will have a field day with this one. I can only hope that it was Kerry's lack of charisma and the common touch, and not his positions, that got him defeated.

Subject: Re: Apology, Professor Koehler?
I'd be grateful if my American friends would explain to me - while avoiding the dull self-loathing that has becoming characteristic of the Left in Europe and the US - what exactly the substantive differences between Bush and Kerry actually were? As far as I can see there were minor differences over abortion and stem cell research, but that's about it. I mean the only image that sticks in my mind about Kerry was his 'reporting for duty' line, which is hardly inspiring is it?
I'm not trolling here, I would like to know - I mean is the difference really about image/personality more than anything else?
