You are quite probably correct here since one of the things it is very
difficult to do with E-learning is to motivate. Higher Education students
and adults are as a rule more motivated and more cope better with solitary
conditions. However, I believe that we are definitely missing a trick by
looking in this direction.
For most people learning is a social activity, this is why students go to
college instead of sitting at home with a book. Angela Mcfarlane's research
on computer games also showed that for children, playing computer games is a
social activity. They play with their mates and talk about the games with
their peers and learn how to be a better player from these conversations.
They could have these conversations online but unless you get them to do it
at the same time the conversations become fragmented and of significantly
less use. Again adults will cope better with this.
Sorry this is straying somewhat from the topic of sharing resources. I
think it is time that we all decided exactly what we wanted to acheive with
E-learning so that everyone knew what they were working towards. After all
"if you don't know where you are going, any road will take you there". If
the staff in schools and colleges felt more secure then you MIGHT get more
sharing.

Would the "teacherless environment" being referred to be a more realistic
proposition for higher (or adult oriented) education? Perhaps a gradual
shift away from the traditional delivery of lectures in classrooms in favour
of increased use of electronic delivery systems, freeing up staff-student
contact time for the facilitation of learning (tutorials, discussions,
seminars, and so on)? This may even free up more time for staff to pursue
research (in theory).

I think you should have read last week's education guadian where Prof
Steve
Molyneax was advocating exactly that. The reporter, to his credit did
point
out that nobody is saying when this is likely to be a reality. However,
we
have to remember that Prof Molyneaux sits on the government taskforce
for
IT. The same Taskforce which published "Getting on with IT" about 18
months
ago. It is, therefore, not unreasonable for people to draw the
conclusion
that he either represents or can influence government thinking.

Ken,
>>stories about teacherless classes and kids sitting at home with a
computer<<
Examples?? I have to say I don't see any evidence of this. My impression
is
that
this might have been the case at one time but it's no longer current.
It's
certainly not implied in any of the Government strategies.
