I would guess not. Especially if you include the cost of implementation and training i.e. 4 screws, a handyman and a set of pens vs. 10 techies and the PCs to run it on :-)

I don't have any research to back it up though.

As a matter of interest I wonder if Blackboard is more expensive than blackboards. In other words do our institutions spend more on display boards, whiteboards etc, than on the VLE?

Just a thought!

We were using chalk and blackboards when I started - those were the days!!

Now we're using a considerably more expensive Blackboard

I was trained as an 'educational technologist' in the manner of Derek Rowntree (an educationalist foremost and technologist second) and became a 'media resources officer' with the ILEA during the 1970's and early 80's - before computers were much in evidence. The term learning technologist appears to be in vogue at moment - the focus as I perceive it on learning enhancement through the appropriate use of technology.

We have a learning technologist in our unit - he was originally a media resources technician and trained during the 1980's in all manner of media - much of what he now does is accomplished via a computer rather than the plethora of audio visual equipment he originally used.

During the past few years I have had a real sense of deja vu as the principles and approaches of the 70/80's appear to be resurfacing in support of this 'new' concept of eLearning. I am probably doing more educational technology work now than when I originally trained - an interesting thought - as I trained nearly 30 years ago is this how long it takes for the new ideas to become accepted, modern day practice?
