Hi Nigel
I've used online communications tools, for example your VLE Chat or
conferencing system for icebreakers. You could put them into small
groups, and get them to each find two things they have in common with
each of the others in the group (eg loathe cats, born abroad, don't own
a TV) - with the rule that they can't choose obvious things like they
are all on VLE training. This is pretty much what someone else has
suggested, though online.
Another fun thing to do is for each person to describe their ideal
dining out experience (eg country, setting, food and drink, who with,
any music in the background).
What about some sort of quiz. Put people in a group, and they each
have to set a question for all the others in the group based on some
hobby or interest. Then the group has to try to find answers to to the
questions, using the web. You might want to tell people that as well as
the answers they also need to include the URL. This might feed into
something you may be doing about referencing later in the course????
Hope this is useful.
