An excellent resource is "The Demand for Public Transit: A Practical
Guide," Transportation Research Laboratory, Report TRL 593
(http://www.trl.co.uk), 2004; available at
http://www.demandforpublictransport.co.uk. It is a comprehensive analysis
of the various factors that affect transit ridership, including fares,
quality of service, and costs of automobile travel. It is primarily
intended to evaluate local transport, particularly car versus transit, but
the basic evaluation criteria should be transferable to the relative
time/money/convenience factors affecting longer-distance travel choices.
